Drug & Alcohol Services
Drugs and alcohol services meet many of the needs of the people that use them with scores of people achieving their goals in recovery and moving on to enjoy a much better lifestyle. Other specialist services like those for carers provide a range of services that help loved ones as well as addiction to drugs and alcohol affects the individual, their families and the wider community.
Drug and alcohol addiction or dependence is often referred to as a symptom of underlying issues and people who present for help with drugs and alcohol issues will need other issues addressing as well. Some related issues include mental health, neurodiversity, long term health conditions, unemployment, homelessness and a history of trauma. As a result of these complex needs, there are a significant number of people working with drug and alcohol users whose main focus of work is not drugs and alcohol. This workforce in East Sussex has expressed an interest in learning more about Drugs and Alcohol issues at a recent network event, hosted by Seaview and Brighton University.
Effective Training
The question about who is best placed to deliver training about Drugs and Alcohol is a thorny one and in recent years this responsibility has been shared between different service providers in East Sussex. Some service providers focus on recruiting people with lived experience to deliver services and this lived experience helps to inspire clients to follow in their footsteps. The group of Lived Experience Peers in East Sussex are no exception and their personal experience enhances an educational course about drugs and alcohol by adding accounts of many of the barriers facing adults who are trying to access support with their recovery.
Connect’s Alcohol and Drug Awareness training can be of huge benefit to everyone affected by Alcohol or Drugs, indirectly or directly, as carers for example. The one day course is aimed at providing an introduction to the issues facing people with drugs and alcohol issues, the stories about what it’s like trying to get help, the various drugs and effects, the stigma, the risks and the harms caused by drugs and alcohol and more.
